Jay Alexander is an independent arbitrator with over 30 years of experience in international dispute resolution, and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Reports by Chambers have described him as "candid, intelligent, thorough and well versed in arbitration" (2021), "a compelling communicator in all environments" (2019), "one of the best international litigators" (2018), and someone who "grasps complex matters very quickly" (2017).

Mr. Alexander is experienced as an arbitral chair, co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator, and emergency arbitrator. He has acted as an arbitrator, and as a lead arbitration counsel, in a wide variety of disputes. He has worked under many sets of rules, including AAA, ICC, ICDR, ICSID, ICSID Additional Facility, KCAB, LCIA, and UNCITRAL. Matters have arisen in the commodities, construction, energy, finance, franchise and distributorship, insurance, investment, manufacturing, technology, and telecommunications sectors.  Those matters have been governed by the law of many common law jurisdictions (including New York law and the law of England and Wales), the law of many civil law jurisdictions (including the laws of Brazil, Cameroon, France, Korea, Qatar, Russia, Sweden, and Venezuela), and public international law.

Throughout his career, Mr. Alexander has been involved in a broad range of arbitrations, litigations, and criminal investigations arising throughout the world, including in Angola, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, Ecuador, Egypt, England, India, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mexico, Mongolia, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, Nigeria, Norway, Panama, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Venezuela. The wide-ranging nature of the work that Mr. Alexander has performed throughout his career gives him both a broad perspective and an appreciation for the legal, commercial, and cultural aspects of the disputes he is asked to decide.

Prior to becoming an independent arbitrator, Mr. Alexander was a senior partner at Baker Botts LLP, where he chaired the international arbitration and dispute resolution practice. He spent a decade in that firm’s Washington D.C. office and then over a decade in its London, England office. Prior to joining Baker Botts, Mr. Alexander was a partner at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin, a boutique trial law firm in Washington D.C. that merged into Baker Botts.

Mr. Alexander served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg following his graduation from Stanford Law School. He has served as a guest lecturer at various universities in the United Kingdom and the United States on international arbitration and comparative law topics. He has also served as a judge on the International Court of Appeal of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile.

Mr. Alexander is a member of the ICC’s USCIB Arbitrator Nominations Commission, the USCIB/ICC USA Task Force on DEI, the LCIA User’s Council, the SIAC User’s Council, the ITA Advisory Board, and is included on various institutional databases for arbitrators.
